About Us

The empowerment of women and youth is a central feature for sustainable development of society and our is to work relentlessly in joining efforts to usher activism in society that must intersect all forms of discrimination and inequalities. This is aligned with providing opportunities for the previously marginalised, particularly women and youth, to contribute meaningfully to the economy.

In its early days, the Mmamoloko Kubayi Foundation began with community outreach programmes in Soweto, expanding nationwide to support numerous beneficiaries, primarily women and youth, through advocacy, education, and training initiatives. Our Patron was born and raised in an impoverished household in Soweto by a single parent of five who worked as a domestic worker. Mmamoloko “Nkhensani” Kubayi, a cabinet minister and currently leading the Justice and Constitutional Development portfolio, has been a community activist throughout her life. The daily struggles of ordinary citizens in her surroundings ignited her political consciousness and unwavering commitment to serving people, especially the marginalised.

The gender imbalance in our society cannot go unchallenged; where women are still victims of the triple challenges of class, gender, and race. A new report by Statistics South Africa titled Gender Series Volume IX: Women Empowerment, 2017–2022 shows that women in SA are more likely to be unemployed than men and are less likely to participate in the labour market than their male counterparts. Nowhere else is this gender imbalance more apparent than in the economic sphere. The integration of women and youth participation in the economy is crucial for a truly inclusive economy.
The extent of the strife faced, mainly by women and young people country-wide, was observed first hand by the Patron as she traversed the country as part of the official duties in various portfolios she has led in government, including Energy, Communications and Science and Technology, Tourism, and Acting Health Minister, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
